Heel Pain in the bottom of the heel area is one of the most common
symptoms treated by podiatrists. Plantar fasciitis is a condition caused
by strain or partial tear of the ligament (plantar fascia) that attaches
to the heel bone (calcaneus). Chronic inflammation of the heel may result
as this condition goes untreated. Heel spurs are often present at the
attachment site of the plantar fascia but are actually rarely indicated
as the cause of the pain.
Individuals the suffer with heel pain can often improve their condition
by wearing a rather stiff supportive shoe. Arch support rather than cushions
for heel are generally more successful forms of treatment. Surgery is
rarely indicated for this condition, but tape strapping and even cortisone
injections are sometimes needed to resolve recalcitrant heel pain. Orthotics
are arch supports sometimes prescribed for this condition.
