Foot Problems Arthritis is a condition characterized by inflammation/swelling of the joint lining and degeneration of the cartilage, usually with fluid accumulation in the joints. Arthritis can affect the joint of the big toe, causing pain and reduced joint motion. A bunion-like protrusion can also be present. In a keller bunionectomy, the base of the bone is removed, and fibrous tissue fills in the space. You may have to wear a splint or special shoe for several weeks. In some cases, the joint can be repaired. With severe joint degeneration, a procedure called arthroplasty with joint implantation is required. The joint is removed and replaced with either a one or two-piece implant. |
